Appreciate this? Toss a coin to your Mando… hit the “Thanks” button to send me a tip! Thanks! I've been using XS strings for the last year or so since I stumbled upon them in my search for an Elixir replacement. They've made me happy more often than not, but the brightness/brassiness of their sound has annoyed me a bit, especially on my new mandolin. I decided to splurge and re-try the Thomastik-Infeld mandolin strings. They're pricey, and they didn't work the best on my last mandolin (see the final movement of my Bach Cello Suites recording for what that sounded like... not bad, but not great IMO), but I thought this mandolin would compensate for what I didn't like about the T-Is on my last instrument. For my own edification, as well as that of the community at large, I compared them as evenly as I could, with a couple different picks for variety. Hopefully this helps. In the end, I'm very pleased with the T-Is so far. The brightness is definitely lower, but the sustain is longer than I remember, and string-to-string evenness is much better. I can actually hear my walking bass lines (on other songs) now. They take quite a beating and keep giving more sound if you lay into them, and they're very smooth and comfortable on the fingers. I think they'll be amazing for recording (though if I were trying to kill a banjo in a live jam session I'd probably want the XS brightness back.) I'll run these for a good long while!
