For this video we’re at the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge, where Darby Creek empties into the Delaware. One of the popular things to do at this refuge and really on the water anywhere is fishing. The problem is that the fish can be toxic to eat. We live in an area that has a long history of pollution from factories and other sources. A lot of the pollutants that got dumped into the water or on land nearby where they can leach into the water are still out here. If you are someone who fishes and wants to eat what you catch, be sure to check with the PA Fish and Boat Commission, which issues fish consumption advisories that tell people how much of which fish it is safe to eat, and how often. The Delaware River Keeper Network, a local environmental group, also does a lot of great education about fish consumption. Our thanks to John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge and the William Penn Foundation. For more Billy Brown visit Phillynature.org.
