In this interview, Selalelo speaks with a theologian and pastor about the rise of femicide in Botswana and what it reveals about masculinity, power, and the moral health of the nation. The conversation examines how violence against women is often framed as “crimes of passion,” and questions whether these acts are better understood as emotional outbursts or as the outcome of deeper systems of entitlement and control. It explores how rejection, humiliation, and loss of authority are experienced by men, and how theology and church teaching have shaped, and sometimes failed to reshape, ideas of manhood. The discussion also confronts the use of religious language to justify dominance, submission, and silence, asking whether patriarchy has hidden behind theology in ways that make violence seem morally defensible. Attention is given to how churches respond when women seek help, the tension between forgiveness and justice, and the practical steps religious institutions must take to protect women before harm occurs. This interview forms part of Selalelo’s work to examine how belief systems, institutions, and everyday teachings shape the lives and safety of women and girls, and to insist that faith must never be used to excuse violence.
