Ruling since 1965, Ferdinand Marcos and his wife Imelda maintained power through martial law, cronyism and violent repression, amassing vast personal wealth while enjoying American support as a strategic Cold War ally. The February 1986 presidential election pitted Marcos against Corazon Aquino, the widow of the slain opposition leader, whose candidacy transformed popular grief into a mass political movement. When Marcos declared victory amid widespread allegations of electoral fraud and voter intimidation, huge demonstrations erupted across the Philippines. The army rebelled and Washington turned.
