Almost 1,800 years ago, in the shadow of Roman persecution, early Egyptian Christians composed a hymn — a song full of joy, confidence, and worship to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Buried in the sands of Egypt for centuries, the hymn was unearthed on a fragile piece of papyrus in the early 1900s and quietly archived at Oxford. Now, this ancient song — known as the Oxyrhynchus Hymn — is being brought back to life. In this exclusive preview, John Dickson walks us through the hymn’s remarkable discovery and meaning. Chris Tomlin shares his personal response to being part of the resurrection of this early Christian melody, brought to the modern Church in partnership with Ben Fielding. This isn’t just a song. It’s Christianity at the source — a worship offering from the earliest believers, set to music with ancient notation, and centred on the Trinity. The First Hymn isn’t just a film. It’s a sacred invitation to join with the first believers in lifting our voices to the only giver of all good gifts.
