This is an adapted recreation of the famous dance ensemble scene from the movie « Stormy Weather » (1943). It is a performance put together by the Cats Club Chorus Line & friends to celebrate Ethel Bruneau’s 80th anniversary at the Cat’s Corner Exchange in Montreal on Sat. October 29th. Originally from Harlem, « Miss Swing » Bruneau came to Montreal in 1953, at age 17, working as a dancer for the Cab Calloway Orchestra. She ended up staying in the neon city for the rest of her life, working in the multiple nightclubs of the city and soon becoming known as the « Queen of Afrocuban », and then opening her own tap school. At a young age, she was one of Mary Bruce Dancing School « Starbuds », and learned from the Harlem « Mayor », Bill « Bojangle » Robinson who visited the school. This chosen scene of the movie features both Cab Calloway and Bill Robinson, and seemed the perfect present to honor her life and cultural heritage in Montreal. Happy birthday Ethel ! Thank you for your presence, your teaching, your wise words, your enthusiasm. You are a gem, an inspiration and a treasure to all of us.
