THE SONGBIRD: Serena Sáenz was born in 1994 in Barcelona. She made her professional debut at the age of 13 in a children's opera at the Gran Theatre del Liceu. Sáenz studied at the conservatories in Barcelona and Berlin and did well in singing competitions including three prizes at the Operalia competition (2022), first prize at the Montserrat Caballé International Singing Competition (2021), and multiple prizes in the Paris Opera Competition and the Francisco Viñas Competition in Barcelona. Opera appearances have included Norina and Lucia in Barcelona, Zerbinetta and Blonde in Vienna, Konstanze in Granada, Lisa (Sonnambula) in Madrid, Queen of the Night in Oviedo, Mlle. Silberklang in Salzburg, Clorinda in Montpellier, Pamina and Nannetta in Berlin. THE MUSIC: Mozart's 1775 pastoral opera seria "Il re pastore" K.208 was commissioned for a visit by the Archduke of Austria to Salzburg, where it had its premiere in April 1775 -- 250 years ago! The small cast has three sopranos (Elisa, Tamiri, and the leading role of Aminta, written for a castrato) and two tenors. The plot revolves around Aminta's discovery that he is more than a simple shepherd, but in fact the heir to the throne of Sidon, and how he is torn between fulfilling that royal duty and his love for the shepherdess Elisa. "Alla selva, al prato" is Elisa's first aria and a charming display piece, here with added cadenzas up to a sustained High E.
