Here's the new offering from Sony, the FDR-AX53 4K digital camcorder. This is our first test of the FDR-AX53, using only 1080 60P and 1080 120P video settings. The 120P feature permits extended slo-mo scenes. We also took several 16.6MP still images, presented at the end of the video. All of this was hand-held, using an old-school L-bracket grip on which we mounted a Rode VideoMic for directional audio. We are delighted with the promise of the FDR-AX53, and expect to get even better results as we familiarize ourselves with this remarkable camcorder's capabilities. With Sony's Balanced Optical SteadyShot feature, unwanted onscreen movement is minimized. We think battery consumption is higher than with some camcorders -- maybe due to the active optical steadyshot requirements? So we bought two extra batteries as well as the camcorder from Amazon. We've enjoyed good service and good customer assistance from Wasabi aftermarket batteries; some users may prefer to stick with Sony branded products. One item that we think could be better: the eye-level viewfinder lacks a rubber eyecup. Without a close-fitting rubber eyecup, the sun can be blinding from some angles. Seems like a really inexpensive fix; don't know why Sony did not include one. We went to Gordon's Cameras, a wonderfully old-school camera store in Reno, Nevada, and he happened to have a single spare eyecup from who-knows-what that we were able to fit to the eyepiece on the camcorder. But why didn't Sony do it that way right out of the box? Have you subscribed to the Airailimages Channel on YouTube? Thanks!
