Quick Look at Promise R4i 32TB MPX RAID Module for Mac Pro

A Very Quick Look at Pegasus R4i 32TB (4x8TB) RAID MPX Module for Mac Pro. Bought this one with the idea of keeping it, however, due to the fan noise it creates on a Mac Pro (in my very silent room), and being spoiled by 8TB OWC PCIe SSD speeds, I ended up returning it. It's a great "little" RAID enclosure for someone who needs A TON of storage INSIDE a Mac Pro, however, there are MUCH better and faster options (especially from Promise) if you can do with an External Thunderbolt enclosure. #Pegasus #R4i #MacPro Jump to: 00:08 - Unboxing 00:47 - Install into MacPro's PCI Slots 01:45 - Sound Check (makes some noise) 02:38 - OS X Software Install and Quick Look 03:34 - RAID 5 Speed Tests (W: 726MB/sec, R: 587MB/sec) 05:17 - RAID 0 Speed Tests (W: 991MB/sec, R: 741MB/sec) 06:59 - Final Thoughts (It's Aight) Description Continued: It seems this is NOT really a true MPX module (from what I can tell). The "MPX" slot is really only used for extra POWER for the drives. If Promise had built in a Thunderbolt controller into it, and made a bit better use of the MPX slot it is occupying - it would have been a much more compelling device IMHO. A few more Thunderbolt ports on the back of the Mac Pro are always welcome, so any card that goes into an MPX slot, unless it is using all the bandwidth available - should give us some more bang for the buck by including TB controller and ports - otherwise it is a waste of space and PCI lanes. Please note: I completely forgot to even test RAID 10 speeds. I am just so spoiled by SSD speeds, that I just couldn't wait to be done with it. Also, hearing spinning drives click, and Mac Pro fan noise increase it's pitch due to R4i being inside the case also forced me to get it our of there ASAP. Re: Noise: I admit - the noise is NOT bad if you have some other ambient sounds in your room, but if your Mac Pro tower is 2-3 feet away from your ear (like mine is) - then you'll definitely hear the fans much more than usual. Lastly - in the instructions they warn one should NOT TRANSPORT THE MAC PRO WITH THIS DEVICE IN IT! It can probably damage your PCIe slot or motherboard altogether if you do as it is quite massive and very heavy.
