Brunswick Civil War Round Table (BCWRT) Meeting Date: Nov 4, 2025 Time: Doors open at 6pm; Program begins at 7pm TOPIC: “A Town Turned Topsy-Turvy: Wilmington and Wilmingtonians During the Civil War” SPEAKER: Dr. Chris Fonvielle LOCATION: Hatch Auditorium, Caswell Beach The Civil War in the Lower Cape Fear when Wilmington played a more important role in our nation’s history than at any other time. In 1860 Wilmington was North Carolina’s busiest port and most populated city. By 1863 it was the Confederacy’s main seaport for the blockade running trade, and soon became known as the “Lifeline of the Confederacy.” By late the following year, Wilmington was the South’s most important city. Chris will also recount fascinating stories of Cape Fearians during the troublesome time: the great escape of William B. Gould and other enslaved African Americans during the yellow fever epidemic of 1862; the successful blockade running sea captain, Mike Usina, and his famous dog Tinker; and Mary Ann Bowie, both the “Soldiers Friend” and the “Intimidator.” In what ways did the great conflict change Wilmington and Wilmingtonians? “A splendid time is guaranteed for all!”
