On February 18, 2023, I led a tour for the Cape Fear Civil War Round Table of the new Joseph Ryder Lewis Jr. Civil War Park in Carolina Beach, NC, and the rest of the "Sugar Loaf" earthworks. This is part two of the tour, where we walked and examined the earthworks and the Sugar Loaf hill itself, in and around Carolina Beach State Park. I discussed the Horne brothers story, where we literally had an example of brother fighting against brother right here in the Wilmington Campaign. I also showed the remains of some Confederate "fox holes" (or "gopher holes" as they called them in the Civil War) towards the end of the video. Check it out, these are *extremely rare! The Battle of Sugar Loaf was the first battle in the Wilmington Campaign after Fort Fisher fell the month before on January 15, 1865. The Battles of Fort Anderson and Forks Road would soon follow the Battle of Sugar Loaf, and Wilmington was then finally captured by Federal forces on February 22, 1865.
