The last remaining Shiite mosque in Armenia is known as the Blue Mosque (Göy Masjid), located in the capital Yerevan. This mosque is one of the rare examples of Islamic architecture in Armenia and represents the religious and cultural heritage of the Muslim communities that lived in Yerevan in the past. Information about the Blue Mosque Construction Date: The mosque was built in 1765-1766 by Huseyin Ali Khan, the governor of the Yerevan Khanate during the Safavid period. Architectural Features: The mosque has Iranian style Islamic architecture. It takes its name from the blue tiles decorating its dome and walls. There is a fountain in the courtyard and a madrasa section consisting of 24 rooms. Minaret: The mosque complex has a single minaret. Historical Use: The mosque was used as both a worship and education center during the Yerevan Khanate period. Use in Soviet Era During the Soviet Union period, the mosque ceased to be a religious building and was used as a history museum. During this process, the religious identity of the mosque was greatly weakened, but was structurally preserved. Current Situation Restoration: In the 1990s, the mosque was restored with the support of the Iranian government. After the restoration, the mosque was opened to the worship of the Muslim minorities remaining in Armenia, especially the Iranians. Purpose of Use: Today, the Blue Mosque is actively used by Iranian Muslims in Yerevan. The mosque is an important religious center for the Shiite community in Armenia.
