In this road safety video, Sophie Ledbrooke, Registered Manager at Unique Senior Care, is joined by partners from Warwickshire Police and Warwickshire County Council to explain simple vehicle checks that can help keep drivers safe, especially when driving for work and during the winter months. Driving is one of the most dangerous activities many of us do every day, and the risk increases when driving for work. This video introduces the POWDER check, a practical way to remember essential vehicle safety checks that can be completed regularly to reduce risk on the road. The video covers fuel awareness, oil and water checks, spotting damage, checking lights and electrics, and making sure tyres are safe and legal. It also explains potential fines and penalties, and why these checks matter for your safety and the safety of others. In this video, you’ll learn: Why driving for work carries an increased risk. What the POWDER vehicle safety check stands for. How to check fuel, oil, water, damage, electrics, and tyres. Legal requirements around lights and tyre tread. Why regular checks can prevent breakdowns and collisions. 📍 About This Collaboration This video was created in partnership with Unique Senior Care, Warwickshire Police, and Warwickshire County Council Road Safety Education, with the shared aim of improving road safety awareness for the general public and people who drive as part of their work 0:00 – Introduction and why road safety matters 0:47 – Why driving for work increases risk 1:09 – POWDER vehicle checks explained 2:07 – P for Petrol (fuel and winter preparedness) 3:39 – O for Oil (how to check oil safely) 5:35 – W for Water (screen wash and coolant) 7:09 – D for Damage (vehicle walk-around checks) 8:00 – E for Electrics (lights, indicators, horn) 9:08 – Fines and penalties for faulty lights 10:18 – R for Rubber (tyres, tread depth, pressure) 14:06 – Tyre fines and penalty points explained 14:55 – POWDER recap and final safety message In 2024 – 1602 people died on UK roads and 29,467 people seriously injured from collisions on UK roads. These are commonly referred to as KSI (Killed and Seriously Injured) figures. Our partners in Warwickshire (WCC Road Safety Education, WRSP, Police and Highways to name a few) have a target of reducing KSI figures by 50% by 2030. The Government has just launched its Road Safety Strategy with a more ambitious target of 65% reduction in KSI figures by 2035. When driving for work, you are up to 50% more likely to be involved in a collision, and data from 2024 shows that 23% of all KSIs involved someone driving for Work. Defective tyres were a contributing factor in 153 KSI collisions in 2024. Research has shown that around 8% of vehicles on our roads have at least 1 illegal tyre, with nearly 40% of vehicles having tyres that have illegal tread depths (below 1.6mm) or barely legal (between 1.6mm and 2mm) tyres. 10% of MOT failures are due to tyres - that’s around 2 million MOT failures due to tyres. Many drivers ignore the advisory on an MOT test regarding tyres and do not take any action until the next MOT when they fail, meaning they could have been driving on illegal and dangerous tyres for months. 🧭 Useful links 📺 Watch our Moving & Handling training series: • Moving & handling made simple | Unique Sen... 📚 Find more helpful resources in our Learning Centre: https://www.uniquecare.co.uk/learning... 🌍 Visit our website for more about our services: https://www.uniquecare.co.uk 💷 Estimate the cost of home care using our calculator: https://www.uniquecare.co.uk/home-car... 👩⚕️ Interested in joining our care team? https://www.uniquecare.co.uk/carer-jobs/ 🔗 Follow us for updates / unique.senior.care / unique-senior-care / uniqueseniorcareuk
