When Pentonville Prison opened in London in 1842, it pioneered the "separate system"—inmates locked in complete solitary confinement 23 hours per day, forbidden from speaking, wearing masks when outside their cells, and forced to work in total silence to "reform" their souls through isolation. Within 10 years, over 3,000 prisoners had gone violently insane, 26 committed suicide, and 55 died from the psychological torture, but Victorian reformers called this "progress" and built 54 more prisons on the same model across Britain. The prison still operates today with the original Victorian cells, and paranormal investigators claim it's the most haunted building in London—not because of ghosts, but because the architecture itself was designed to destroy the human mind, and that malevolent purpose is embedded in the walls.
