Wood Street is one of the busiest and most important stations of the Pittsburgh Light Rail system. Running in the subway tunnel here, light rail trains follow in and out of the station like water on a normal Pre-COVID-19 peak hour. Wood Street has a very typical subway station set up with two side platforms that for the most part allow high-floor boarding to happen. There is two short sections of low-platform on both sides but these are no longer used. They were built specifically for PCC Streetcars who use to run in the tunnel until 1994 when the Overbrook (Blue) Line shut down citing safety concerns and eventual rebuild/conversion to Light Rail-Standards which eliminated any need for PCCs in the subway tunnel. Because of Pittsburgh being build as "Stadtbahn"-like system similar to Frankfurt U-Bahn, it can run a subway-like operation yet still take on tight turns like a streetcar so the curve to the northwest is built very sharp and only allows trains to do 10 MPH around it in both directions.
