From the first time I heard of them, I always found the Yamas & Niyamas fascinating. They are the commonly the first place to start when learning about yoga philosophy and are often considered as the starting point of understanding yoga, even before the asana practice (the poses we move through in a typical yoga class). The yamas & niyamas act as guideposts on how to interact with ourselves and the world around us in an ethical way. If we lived our lives by these principles, the majority of our suffering would disappear. And oddly enough, I’m discovering that they align very closely with the principles we apply to facilitate behaviour change and personal growth! I’ve decided to spend 2026 diving deeper into each one and how they apply to my life. I’ve chosen which one to focus on each month based on what I felt I’d need most at that time of year, but everything starts with Ahimsa so that was the focus for January. My focus on Santosha (Contentment) for February has already brought up a lot of interesting stuff to sift through, but more on that at the end of the month 🙂 Feel free to follow along with me, or choose which one aligns for you each month and try diving in as well. I don’t think you’ll regret it! (Book: The Yamas & Niyamas by Deborah Adele) #yycyoga #yycyogacommunity #yamasandniyamas #ahimsa #itstartswithkindness
