Enjoy this montage put together by thecelebratedmisterk of the first game of the best-of-three 1979 Major Indoor Soccer League finals, the first in league history. This match was played on March 23, 1979 before 6,096 fans at the Nassau Coliseum in Long Island, NY. The New York Arrows--comprised primarily of veteran professionals from the Rochester Lancers of the NASL--had finished in second during the regular season, and disposed of the Cincinnati Kids in the playoffs to reach the finals. Philadelphia--made up primarily of players from the City's amateur United League--shocked division champion Houston Summit Soccer to punch their ticket to the finals. The Arrows held a slim 6-5 lead after the third quarter, but then pulled away for an easy 14-7 win, paced by seven goals from "The Lord Of All Indoors," Steve Zungul. Shep Messing provided solid goaltending for New York. The teams met two days later at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. With starting keeper Woody Hartman injured during the first match, the Fever had to go with backup Dan Brennan. Although the home side grabbed a quick 2-0 after the first ten minutes, NY shut out the Fever the rest of the half en route to a 9-5 win and the title. Messing made 26 saves in the win.
