A day after members of Premier Danielle Smith’s United Conservative governing caucus tabled back-to-work legislation, ending the strike in the province, Alberta Teachers' Association president Jason Schilling addressed the use of the notwithstanding clause to force more than 51,000 teachers back to work. Under the bill, the ATA and its members face hefty fines if they defy the back-to-work order: up to $500 a day for individuals and $500,000 a day for the union. The union for Alberta’s teachers says the province using the Charter of Rights and Freedoms' notwithstanding clause to end their strike is a gross abuse of power — but says it will follow the law.
