More Saturn Games: Sonic R: Victory!

Originally streamed Dec 3, 2022. After doing a bunch of Saturn games for Horror Month, I just want to play more Saturn games! So we keep going, Saturn games for another month! Sonic R is a racing game developed by Traveller's Tales and Sonic Team for the Saturn in 1997. Ostensibly a Mario Kart for Sonic, though this game probably has more in common with Diddy Kong Racing with it's exploration and somewhat weird controls. The stages are surprisingly dense and explorable, with a lot to find and unlock. This game is often criticized for it's controls, which are surprisingly sluggish at first, but as you unlock better characters the game gets more fun to play. It's also interesting that each character seems to have their own unique abilities, like double jumps or gliding over water. The real highlight of this game is definitely the soundtrack. By British composer Richard Jacques, the incredibly catchy and upbeat songs rival some of the best music in racing games, even Daytona. The style of the songs is a bit on the cheesy side, and some may dislike them for that, but they are so earnest and so incredibly catchy; this is one of the comfiest soundtracks ever made. In conclusion... play it for the soundtrack!
