“Sarajevo” is a powerful and emotional song by Czech singer-songwriter Jaromír Nohavica, featured on his 1996 album Divné století (Strange Century). The song reflects on the tragedy of war, particularly the Bosnian War and the Siege of Sarajevo in the 1990s. Through poetic lyrics and minimal instrumentation, Nohavica delivers a deeply human message about suffering, loss, and the absurdity of violence. The song paints a poetic picture of a couple who have lost everything—possibly due to flooding or war—yet remain hopeful. They dream of marriage in Sarajevo, symbolizing a new beginning. The imagery of two blue letters, a tamarisk wreath, and building a house from white stone all convey longing, love, and a future beyond hardship. The refrain “still the fire burns… but it’s time to sleep” adds a bittersweet sense of acceptance and quiet resolve. Jakub performed this beautiful song with voice and guitar in a simple home setting, without any effects or post-production. We recorded it directly in front of a computer, enjoying the music together with our drinks, trying to truly feel the emotion behind each word and note. It was a relaxed, heartfelt session — raw and honest. We hope this version brings you a bit of peace and reflection. Special thanks to Julia Svaboda for her support on the video.
