Culture, DSM5, and How It Will Impact Your Work

Dr. Roberto Lewis-Fernández is a Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University and was the Chair of the DSM-5 Cross-Cultural Issues Sub-Group. Dr. Lewis-Fernández describes how changes in the DSM-5 with respect to culture will influence your everyday clinical practice. Dr. Lewis-Fernández uses examples of social anxiety disorder, Khyal Attacks, and Ataques de Nervios to illustrate how culture pervades clinical assessments, diagnostic criteria, treatment-planning, engagement with our patients and clients, and other areas of mental health and healthcare. Dr. Lewis-Fernández discusses the wide ranging work of his Sub-Group, key changes from DSM-4 to DSM-5 with respect to cultural issues, and the Sub-Group's influence on the integration of culture throughout DSM-5.
