Han Qiao: Das Jetzt, for Dongxiao in G and Erhu In Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit, there is a passage that reads: “Es wird das Jetzt gezeigt, dieses Jetzt. Jetzt; es hat schon aufgehört zu sein, indem es gezeigt wird.” (“The moment the ‘now’ is brought into consciousness, it has already ceased to be.”) This statement reveals the fleeting nature of the “now”: as soon as it is perceived, it disappears, rendering each moment of time elusive and transient. This led me to reflect on human consciousness of time. Our perception is not always continuous or clearly defined. At times, individuals cannot seamlessly connect past experiences with the present moment in their awareness. Dementia patients, for instance, may complete an action but remain unable to recall the process, as if that span of time had never existed in their consciousness. Yet even ordinary people occasionally experience something similar. If one could truly become aware of this “disappearance of time,” it might suggest, in some sense, the possibility of time’s recurrence. For me, this philosophical insight not only highlights the ephemerality of time, but also provokes questions about the relationship between existence and consciousness. Each awareness of the “now” is both a fleeting grasp of life’s flow and an act of self-recognition.
