Welcome to my Youtube channel, The Justice Center, and the green criminology playlist. This series focuses on understanding the importance of green criminology within the context of cultural awareness and note how the two fields are closely connected. This playlist is closely associated with another: Cultural Awareness. You may want to check it out too. It explores how multiculturalism impacts and influences professionalism in criminal justice and other vocations. There is a focus on expanding our self-awareness and understanding and reflecting on our biases. We also examine how bias can influence behavior and assist in developing strong community relationships concerning race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, poverty, religion, age, disability, and language. If you want more information on these topics, email me at drhalvey@yahoo.com. I'd love to hear from you! So, What is Cultural Awareness? The field of study known as cultural awareness is generally focused on understanding and appreciating different cultural practices, values, beliefs, and customs. Cultural awareness is essential to effectively communicating and interacting with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. This field of study involves learning about the cultural dimensions of identity, such as ethnicity, race, gender, religion, language, and socio-economic status (Quappe & Cantatore, 2005). Cultural awareness also involves learning to recognize and manage cultural biases and stereotypes and developing cross-cultural communication and conflict-resolution skills. This field of study draws on insights from various disciplines, including anthropology, sociology, psychology, and education. It has applications in multiple areas; cultural awareness applies to business, healthcare, education, and international relations (Baker, 2012). It is imperative for churches to study cultural awareness. It is a way to promote inclusivity and deepen intimacy among attendees. By understanding and appreciating the cultural backgrounds and traditions of the congregation's members, the church can create a welcoming and inclusive environment. It helps to make everyone feel accepted and valued, regardless of their cultural background. The success of the church rises and falls on relationships. Relationships require intimacy. The definition for intimacy I like to use is “In-To-Me- See.” Knowing and understanding one another through cultural awareness will fuel the church's life. To avoid misunderstandings: Cultures have different customs, values, and ways of expressing themselves, sometimes leading to misunderstandings. By studying cultural awareness, churches can learn to communicate more effectively and avoid misunderstandings. To build bridges: Cultural awareness can help churches build bridges between different communities, allowing for greater understanding and cooperation. It can help to foster relationships with people from different cultures and faiths, promoting harmony and unity. To expand outreach: Culturally aware churches can better reach out to people from different cultural backgrounds. It enables them to tailor their outreach efforts to meet the needs of diverse groups, helping to grow the church's membership and impact. To honor God's creation: As believers in a God who created all people, studying cultural awareness is a way to honor and celebrate the diversity of God's creation. It helps to recognize the value and uniqueness of every person, regardless of their cultural background. Raising cultural awareness in the church is a way to glorify God! What is green criminology? Green criminology is a subfield of criminology focusing on environmental harm and crime. Overall, green criminologists study environmental crimes' root causes and motivations and the social, economic, and political factors contributing to their perpetuation (Hall, 2017). Much like cultural awareness, Eco-justice is essential to the church too. God’s original plan for humanity was to be caretakers [good stewards] of His creation. We need to be concerned about environmental impact and make it a part of the ministry matrix of our congregations. Also, the Gospel intends for everyone to experience the best, most fulfilling life possible. Environmental degradation hurts people and leads to environmental racism. The very people whom God loves and Jesus Christ died for. What is the connection between green criminology and cultural awareness? There is a relationship between green criminology and cultural awareness. Harmful activities that fall within the scope of green criminology often have cultural dimensions. A lack of cultural awareness can lead to a failure to appreciate the importance of such practices and can lead to policies that harm some communities.
