Palestinian authors Dr Ghada Karmi, Karl Sabbagh and Selma Dabbagh speak about their work and writing, with a common theme of Palestinian Exile and Return, as part of the 2015 Palestine Unlocked festival in Oxford Ghada Karmi – speaks about her new book “Return: A Palestinian Memoir”. Beautifully written and deeply moving, Return is a passionate exploration of belonging and exile and the impossibility of finding home. The book also offers an insightful portrait of Palestine and the possibilities of peace. Ghada Karmi was born in Jerusalem and trained as a doctor of medicine at Bristol University. She established the first British-Palestinian medical charity in 1972 and was an Associate Fellow at the Royal Institute for International Affairs. Her previous books include the best-selling In Search of Fatima, The Ethnic Health Factfile and Jerusalem Today: What Future for the Peace Process? Palestinian author, journalist and television producer Karl Sabbagh is managing director of Skyscraper Publications. He has written nearly a dozen books, ranging across topics as diverse as architecture, psychology, history, mathematics, fraud, Victorian boys’ papers, and the Middle East. most notably “Palestine, a Personal History” and “Britain in Palestine” Selma Dabbagh is a British Palestinian writer of fiction. Her first novel, Out of It (Bloomsbury, 2011) was nominated as a Guardian Book of the Year in 2011 and 2012. She has also written short stories that have been published by Granta, the British Council, International PEN and Wasafiri and have won or been nominated for a number of awards. Her first radio play, The Brick, set in Jerusalem, was broadcast by Radio 4 in January 2014 and nominated for an Imison Award for new writing.
