In 1991, six men robbed an AutoZone store in Talladega, Alabama. A customer named Doug Battle was shot and killed during the robbery. Sonny wasn't even inside the building when the shot was fired. But under Alabama's felony murder law, he was sentenced to death. The man who actually pulled the trigger? His sentence was later reduced to life without parole. By 2026, the jurors who sentenced Sonny wanted it stopped. The victim's own daughter wanted it stopped. More than 67,000 people signed a petition urging Alabama Governor Kay Ivey to intervene.
