It's Macca's birthday. He is, without question, the greatest living songwriter, and we are lucky to be sharing the earth with him. Penny Lane is a band at the peak of their powers. Like so many other styles and forms, The Beatles took baroque pop and mastered. While @johnlennon's genius lay in being exactly who he was, and conveying that to the audience, @paulmccartney 's genius is being whoever he wants to be. That's not to say that there aren't idiosyncrasies through his flitting around: Penny Lane is a very Paul take on the acid experience. While most songwriters in the midst of the psychedelic experiment are saying "no one understands me, i am a child" with a constant sense of menace, Paul says "it's the old days and I am fingering girls". He creates a real technicolour image of the goings on around the street. The banker, fireman, barber, and nurse (his mum is never far away in his greatest works) are treated as old friends. The LSD informs the shift in the latter half of the verse lines, from B major to B minor as things fray at the edges. There is also the wonderfully acidy line "she feels as if she's in a play, she is anyway." The key changes DOWN into the chorus and yet still lifts with that soaring melody. The idea of a piccolo trumpet solo in the perfect slice of baroque pop is so on the nose that it works perfectly. As a double A side with Strawberry Fields, it is the perfect single so, of course, it got to number 2 in the charts (although this is probably to do with an inability of record shop owners to understand the double A side concept, another first for a.band that invented most things in popular music). A year later, the dream was over, popular culture was turning darker, and the band was fracturing, but this was a band at the absolute peak of their powers. Arthur Schopenhauer’s definition of genius: unlike talent, which hits a target nobody else can reach, genius hits a target nobody else can see, is very much evident here.
