Memphis, Tennessee, is located on the banks of the Mississippi. The city is famous for its musical history and as the home of the blues, which originated on the legendary Beale Street. The Rock'n'Soul Museum in Memphis shows highlights from the history of blues, soul and rock 'n' roll. But Memphis is not only known for its music. A tragedy of the American civil rights movement occurred in the Lorraine Motel, namely the fatal assassination of Martin Luther King. At the end of our visit to Memphis, we experience the lovely tradition of the Peabody Duck March. On the way to Memphis, we drive on the famous Route 61, the Blues Highway. In Clarksdale, Mississippi, about 120 km (75 ml) south of Memphis, we make a short stop at a famous intersection with two crossed guitars in the middle. It is said that blues singer Robert Johnson gave his soul to the devil here in return for becoming the best blues guitarist. This legend is behind the "Cross Road Blues", which became world famous as "Crossroads" by Eric Clapton. In Memphis, we first visit Beale Street. It is one of the most famous streets in the USA and a centerpiece of American music history. This street, just under two kilometers (1,2 ml) long, is known worldwide as the birthplace of the blues. W. C. Handy wrote the "Memphis Blues" here in 1909, the first recorded blues. In the 1920s and 1930s, Beale Street was a vibrant center of African-American culture and music, where legends such as B. B. King and Muddy Waters began their careers. And later, it was a breeding ground for rock'n'roll. The "King of Rock 'n' Roll" Elvis Presley is probably the city's most famous citizen and is immortalized with a bronze statue on Beale Street. Today, Beale Street is a popular tourist attraction that attracts millions of visitors every year. The street is lined with blues clubs, bars, restaurants and souvenir shops. We are there in the morning, at which time life is not yet at full speed. Otherwise, there is surprisingly little going on on the streets of Memphis. In the middle of the city center, we are completely alone in places and we remember that Memphis is one of the more unsafe cities in the USA. Was our unease justified? In any case, nothing happened. Afterwards we go to the Memphis Rock'n'Soul Museum, which presents the history of music in the city. The museum offers a comprehensive music experience from the beginnings of the blues and the early radio stations that spread it, to the Sun Studios, where Elvis Presley began his career, to the Stax Studios, which were dedicated to soul. Ike Turner's piano is here, a guitar belonging to Elvis Presley can be seen, and also "Lucille", the legendary guitar of B.B. King. But Memphis is not just music, it was also the scene of one of the darkest chapters of the American civil rights movement. On April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King was assassinated in the city. He was staying at the Lorraine Motel to support the strikes of sanitation workers in the city, who were protesting against unfair working conditions and racial discrimination. There, he was shot on the balcony of his motel room. The Lorraine Motel is now part of a museum on the history of the American civil rights movement. And finally, we visit a very special attraction. The historic Peabody Hotel in Memphis is not only known for its luxury, but also for a unique tradition, namely the Peabody Duck March. This likable ceremony has its origins in the 1930s, when the hotel manager at the time put some live ducks in the hotel fountain as a joke after a hunting trip with a friend. The ducks quickly became an attraction, and the hotel has maintained this tradition ever since. Every day at 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., a group of five ducks, led by a "Duckmaster," marches from their penthouse roof garden across a red carpet into the marble fountain in the hotel lobby. We're staying in Memphis, because what would a visit to the city be without Graceland, Elvis Presley's home! The video is coming soon!
