This comes after the Himachal Pradesh High Court clearly directed that Panchayat elections must be completed before 30 April 2026, rejecting the government’s argument under the Disaster Management Act. The High Court had emphasized that delaying elections beyond the constitutional five-year term undermines grassroots democracy. With elections due in 3,577 Gram Panchayats, political activity has intensified across villages and towns. While Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu maintains that disaster recovery must take priority, the opposition BJP alleges that the government is avoiding elections due to fear of defeat. BJP leader Sudhir Sharma has called the situation a “government versus democracy” battle. On the ground, voters express mixed reactions—some acknowledge disaster-related hardships, while others argue that delaying elections weakens local governance and stalls development. With Panchayat representatives’ terms already expired, administrative officers are currently exercising powers meant for elected bodies. The key question now: Can elections legally be postponed under the Disaster Management Act, or must constitutional timelines prevail?
