Wide of destroyed Russian van STORYLINE: Residents of a village in Ukraine's Chernihiv region say more than 300 people were forced to stay in the basement of a school for almost a month by Russian occupiers. Their ordeal took place in Yahidne village on the outskirts of Chernihiv, 140 kilometers (87 miles) north of Kyiv.   Residents say Russian troops forced them into the basement at gunpoint after they took control of the area in the beginning of March. They said they were made to remain there day and night with rare moments when they were allowed to go outside to the toilet and to cook on open fires. Valentyna Saroyan, one of those who underwent the ordeal, recalled that at least five people died in basement. "An old man died near me and then his wife died next. In one of the rooms was written the names of all those who died during the Russian occupation of their village. There were 18 names on the list. Villagers say they don't know the cause of the deaths. Russian soldiers allowed them to remove the bodies from time to time in order to bury them in a mass grave at the local cemetery. Villagers also recounted other distressing experiences. One of the villagers Julia Surypak said Russians allowed some people to make a short trip to their homes if they sang the Russian anthem. A message on a wall marks the 1st April as "the last day" of the villagers' detention.
