Various of volunteers working STORYLINE: A few months after Russian troops retreated from Yahidne in Ukraine's northern Chernihiv region, the village has gradually returned to life.   People are repairing their homes and a strong wind occasionally picks up the bitter smell of ashes. But no one in the village yet plans to rebuild the school; they prefer not to mention the place at all. Most of Yahidne's residents — almost 400 people — spent a month in the school's basement. The Russians kept them there around the clock as a human shield so the Ukrainian army would not attack the school, where the Russians were based. Only occasionally did they allow residents to come upstairs and enter the yard. But that was not enough. Ten people died in the dark and crowded basement. Survivors blame the lack of fresh air. The Russian troops left the village at the end of March. Now Yahidne is gradually recovering from the shock. The village has the sound of construction tools. Volunteers from all over Ukraine now come to help the villagers rebuild their homes as quick as possible. A copywriter and a camera operator are among those who have been repairing the roof of an apartment block, located in front of the school, for several days under the scorching sun. Denys Ovcharenko, 31, and Denys Huschyk, 43, came from the capital, Kyiv. They joined a volunteering building organization, Dobrobat, which combines "dobro," or kindness, with "bat" for battalion. The men and 22 other volunteers help their compatriots return to their homes as soon as possible. Dobrobat plans to repair the roofs of 21 houses in the coming weeks. About 80% of the volunteers have no experience in construction. Still, they came to Yahidne with a sincere desire to help. Among the volunteers are teachers, athletes, and programmers.
