Barbera is one of Italy’s most planted red grapes. And unlike many Italian reds, it doesn’t have rugged tannins that demand food. Which makes this such an exciting variety for Australian makers and palates. In our Deep Dive blind 🙈 tasting of Australian Barbera, the 2024 Golden Grove Barbera stood out to our panel of winemakers and sommeliers – showcasing why this variety is perfect for Australia’s conditions. In the glass: A delicious riot of blackberries and cherries balanced by baking spices and a savoury, salty edge – almost like vegemite – with a herbal, tea-like thread. Light to medium-bodied with vibrant, zippy acidity and a cleansing finish. So moreish. Golden Grove Estate was founded in Queensland’s Granite Belt in 1946 by Sicilian immigrants Mario and Nita Costanzo. Today, third-generation grower-makers Ray and Jason continue the legacy. In the early 2000s, their father Sam became a pioneer of alternative varieties, planting barbera alongside other Mediterranean grapes when the rest of Australia focused on shiraz, cabernet, and merlot. This barbera sits at 800 meters elevation on ancient decomposed granite soils – nutrient-poor and quick-draining to control barbera’s naturally high yields and preserve fruit concentration. Some of Golden Grove’s vines are 80+ years old, and their alternative variety vision has brought the estate great success and recognition. The proof is in the pudding, as they say. 🔗 Related links 📝 Full Deep Dive write-up: https://younggunofwine.com/australias... #YoungGunOfWine #DeepDive #AustralianWine #WineExperts #BlindTasting #PearlsFromTheDeepDive #WinesOfNow #Barbera #GraniteBelt #Queensland #Tannin
