Spring is underway in the bee yard. Recent rains across Central Texas have kicked off bloom and the bees are responding fast. Colonies that were quiet just a few weeks ago are now bringing in pollen, raising brood, and beginning their spring build-up. In this video we open a hive and take a look at what a healthy colony looks like during this time of year. Expanding brood nests, incoming pollen, and growing populations are all signs that the bees are shifting from winter survival into rapid spring growth. This particular colony started the season on the smaller side but is building up quickly. If the growth continues, it should be a good candidate for a split once queens become available in a few weeks. Spring inspections help beekeepers understand how fast colonies are developing and which hives may soon be ready for management decisions like adding space, preventing swarms, or making splits.
