Spring Smallmouth Bass Fishing on the Niagara River: A Comprehensive Guide The Niagara River, connecting Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, is known for its exceptional smallmouth bass fishing, especially during the spring months. As water temperatures rise into the mid-40s°F by mid-April, smallmouth bass become increasingly active, making this time ideal for anglers seeking both quantity and quality. Prime Fishing Locations The Upper Niagara River, particularly around Strawberry Island, offers numerous productive spots. Similarly, the Lower Niagara River from Devil’s Hole to Lake Ontario, is known for its resident smallmouth bass population. Warmer water temperatures in spring attract bass, making areas with slack water and eddies prime fishing spots. Effective Fishing Techniques Bucktail Jigs: One of our favorite spring baits for smallmouth bass, we use jigs in 1/2 ounce and 3/4 ounce sizes in white and olive to mimic baitfish. Jerkbaits: Utilize suspending jerkbaits with erratic movements to mimic baitfish. Fishing with slack line allows the bait to dart side to side, increasing strike chances. Drop-Shot Rigs: Many anglers use drop-shot rigs with soft plastics. This technique is effective in presenting bait just off the bottom, where smallmouths often feed. Crankbaits and Spinnerbaits: These lures are effective for covering water and attracting active bass, especially in areas with rocky structures. Best Fishing Times In the early spring we find the afternoon can offer the best fishing and target sunny days. This gives the sun time to warm the water and attract bait schools and energize lethargic fish. Seasonal Regulations In New York State, spring bass fishing is catch-and-release only from December 1 through the third Saturday in June. Always check local regulations before fishing to ensure compliance. Regulations are different in the river vs. Lake Erie and Ontario. Spring offers prime conditions for smallmouth bass fishing on the Niagara River. By targeting key locations, employing effective techniques, and adhering to seasonal regulations, anglers can enjoy a successful fishing experience. Always prioritize safety and environmental stewardship during your fishing adventures. #NiagaraRiverFishing #SmallmouthBass #SpringFishing #FishingTips #NiagaraRiver #BassFishing #CatchAndRelease #FishingGuide #UpperNiagaraRiver #LowerNiagaraRiver #FishingGear #FishingTechniques
