For those who don’t know, four of these 25m capacity side loaders were sent to Hornsby Shire Council for fortnightly garden waste runs when Cleanaway took over the contract in early 2010. Significantly, they were the final Sidepaks produced from the former Compaction Systems product range (along with the one that did Ashfield). Although they were somewhat typical Transpacific Cleanaway trucks of this era, with white Iveco ACCO cabs and dark blue body schemes, the bin lifting and paddle packing components were very different to all the Superior Pak Raptors used elsewhere in the country, making these Hornsby green waste rigs unique at the time. I’d been trying to get a video of one of these in action for years, but it wasn’t until April 2016 that I finally got out there on a Friday morning. I looked around and quickly caught up with truck 640 in the suburb of Mount Colah, doing the last parts of the first load. Towards the end of the video you will listen to it packing hard, and you’ll hear that distinct pressure relief noise in the hydraulic lines from the rear as the paddle changes direction. Many thanks to the driver for being cool with me following along, it was awesome to finally see one of these Hornsby Sidepaks in person, especially with so few of these side loader models operating fulltime in general by this point. Not much further into the future after my initial encounter with this truck, I actually found myself behind the steering wheel and operating it! With the exception of my first shift at Cleanaway being a Friday for inductions and driver assessment, when I went out solo that next Monday, I found I was allocated the dark green run on the map and truck 640 as my workhorse – what a way to start off! I recall the leading hand telling me I’d been thrown straight in the deep end, not being a favourite go-to job for other crew, but I couldn’t have been happier haha From memory I only drove 640 that single day early on, but in December that year, I took it out for a few weeks once it had been modified with a Superior Pak Rotac 5000 lifter, as shown in another upload of mine. Anyway here is the same vehicle again, except in its original Sidepak form.
