This exercise is designed to improve your timing and 'internal clock'. Every new level that you play along to has less bars of music and more bars of silence. The premise is that you stop relying on the pulse of the music and start relying on your own inner pulse. It is divided into 3 sections with 4 levels per section, here's what you do: Section 1 - Vamp Just play a simple funk rhythm guitar part, as the levels increase, try to keep in time. Section 2 - Vamp with fills Play the same funk rhythm guitar part from the previous section but every four bars finish the phrase off with a one bar long improvised fill. Section 3 - Solo This time improvise a solo, this gets very hard as the levels increase. There you have it, do this a few times a week and your timing will improve immensely. I should say two things here: 1) This is not my own idea in the slightest, I got it from Victor Wooten's book, 'The Music Lesson' (a very excellent read) but I believe the concept has been around for years. I just made a backing track for my own benefit and thought I'd share it on YouTube. 2) I've discussed this from a guitaristic point of view but you can use this lesson to better your timing on any instrument with a bit of imagination.
