In this episode, real example of a portal frame with the portal beam resting on bearings is discussed. As the portal beam is simply rested on the portal legs through bearings, no moment at the interface location is developed. Hence only horizontal and vertical reactions from the bearings are transferred to the pier. This type of arrangement is similar to text book examples in which a portal beam with pins or hinges at the ends is carrying point loads at different locations of the span. In an effort to bridge the gap between books and reality, a practical application of the text book problem is presented in the episode. The portal beam in itself is a steel tub girder with concrete flanges at the top that host the pedestals supporting bearings on which metro viaduct superstructure rests. At the end of the episode, a comparison between Bending Moment and Shear Force diagram for both pinned and rigid portal frame is also shown.
