Gold Rush Apple variety (co-op 38) is loved by many home growers for flavor, long keeping and disease resistance. Should be high on the list of apples to consider for home orchards and homesteads by reputation alone. Support on / skillcult has been critical in keeping me experimenting and making content. Blog and website: www.skillcult.com/blog Instagram and Facebook @SkillCult The gold rush apple originated in the 70's at Purdue University as part of the PRI breeding program. It's generic name is Co-op 38. It is resistant to disease, high in flavor and keeps extremely well, improving in storage where it also retains it's good texture. It would be hard to find an apple more enthusiastically endorsed by home growers and fruit enthusiasts. The apple has Golden Delicious, Melrose, winesap and rome beauty in it's lineage, which Golden Delicious being the most recent and the seed parent. It is listed as very resistant to scab and mildew and moderately resistant to fireblight. It is susceptible to cedar rust and sooty blotch. I don't think I have seen it get a significant case of scab yet, so it can probably be considered virtually immune. The apples do not ripen well on the tree. I know, I've tried a lot. They tend to crack and the quality declines after the first rains. It is typically picked and not eaten until stored for a time. By all accounts it is a phenomenal keeper developing flavor in storage and retaining a good eating texture. While many apple keep very well when stored for the winter, few retain or develop flavor, or they lose texture. By reputation alone, Gold Rush is an apple that should probably be considered as an option when planning a home orchard or homestead orchard. It has many of the best qualities of golden delicious at it's best, but is more intense, more spicy and it keeps way better. It is also harder. As always, your mileage may vary, but it's worth looking into and asking other local growers about if you are planning on planting apple trees.
