A playthrough of the final boss Karai in Konami's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Tournament fighters for the Super Nintendo/SNES. This game was a request by the user vicenpvp Karai's moves: Jump and rapid fists: HP + HK Jump and throw: LP + LK (Super Move) Electric field: HP + HK (when super bar is full). TMNT Tournament Fighters is a damn good game, both this version and the Mega Drive version, which although not requested I'll probably be covering for its own sake. A cousin of mine had a Super Nintendo way back when and I actually got to try this game. I thought it was fantastic, and it still is an extremely solid and enjoyable fighting game. Konami had the license to make TMNT games for a far while there, making the two fantastic arcade games, as well as games for the NES, SNES and Mega Drive. This game was made to coincide with the first era of TMNT. It was actually known as Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles in the UK, due to moralist hogwash of Thatcher's administration during a time now known as the "video nasty era", a knock-on effect of which saw a number of pieces of media edited in a superfluous manner. One thing which was censored were nunchuks, so in the UK syndication, Mikey never actually uses his nunchuks. Ever. And we noticed too, because kids always notice these things. Luckily, such superfluous censorship has gone the way of the dodo in recent years since, and we probably have the internet to thank for that. Moving on from that deviation, TMNT as a series had a number of notable villains, most notably Baxter Stockman, Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady, and of course old Shred-Head himself. Despite this, for some reason the bosses of the game are Karai, a villain who only initially appeared in the TMNT comics and never in the original cartoon series, and Rat King, a pretty low-level villain from what I recall. Shredder is here, and he's regularly playable for some reason, while Krang and Stockman simply serve as background characters for some reason, although Krang is a boss in the Mega Drive version of the game. I suspect that these choices were made for two reasons; most of the typical TMNT villains had been used as bosses for the two arcade beat-em-ups, so Konami felt it redundant to cover them for a fighting game, and they also probably wanted to pay a bit of fan tribute by including an obscure character as the final boss, which is understandable. Karai later had quite significant roles as a part of the foot clan in the later cartoon adaptations of TMNT. Karai is broken. In fact, she's one of the most broken bosses in existence. Someone at Konami most definitely did not playtest her and Rat King correctly, as they are significantly more powerful than nearly every other character in the game. Karai only has a couple of special moves. The thing is, her air throw is unblockable, and both moves must be countered. Her air flurry punches is extremely broken, dealing significant damage (and probably even stunning) the opponent if it lands. If it is blocked, it deals ludicrous amounts of block damage, and fills the majority of her super meter. This wouldn't be quite so bad if it wasn't for her ability to spam punches, similar using the input b + LP. This allows her to spam punches infinitely, as you see in the video, destroying her opponent within mere seconds if they can't block in time, or filling up her super meter (and allowing for even more block damage) if they do block it. Unless the opponent is some how able to flawlessly counter most of Karai's moves, there are very few ways to defeat her. She has one of the most brutal onslaughts of a moveset in fighting game history, made all the more terrifying by the fact that she has so few moves in the first place. A true nightmare, but admittedly damn fun to play as. These characters can be unlocked, but can only usually be used in versus mode. Here, I had to hack them, which was no problem as the character values were extremely straight-forward to find out. I'll do a tutorial in the future on how I did it, if anyone is interested.
