WEEK ONE HUNDRED ELEVEN: June 11 2025 ( 119 ) Week 40 { German Folk Music } At the May ‘Great Scale Train Show’ in the Maryland State Fairgrounds I was able to acquire the Roco® #43030, a 1988 ‘Der Glaskasten Set’ of a Bavarian ( K.Bay.Sts.B. ) branch line passenger train set. That means we have another Deck Trains Video! Huzzah! So…Still in Deutschland, in the southern state of Bavaria, but about a hundred years earlier. It is 1908 and Krauss® has been building the branch line loco PtL 2/2 for three years, but this new improved model features outside cylinders with the jackshaft. As they are destined for branchline work they have been designed to be able to be operated by one engineer. For visibilities sake there are windows ( 15, if you count the roof vent ) on all sides - hence the name ‘Glass Box’. In 1945 it will be renumbered for the DB as a class 98 ( BR 98 301-322 ), and for the ÖBB as class 688.01 ( only one went to Austria ). Most were withdrawn and scrapped by 1960. Two non-working units survive in museums, one as a cut-away display. Our DB class 98 301 loco is pulling: a GwL Baggage coach, two 3rd Class coaches ( different road numbers ), and a LPw Post coach. And of course, in Part Two we will add the Fleischmann® #5568 Track Cleaning Wagen with the Roco® NEM Close-Fit couplers. Our unit runs a scale 67.93kph ( 42.20mph ) at 50% power while the real thing does up to 50 kph ( 31.6mph ). It is so small it could be mistaken for a smaller scale if it did not fit on HO track. The track cleaning wagen is larger than the loco! The basic 0-6-0 BR80 shunter of 1927 and Donnerbüchsen Coaches of 1921 were absolutely huge in comparisons.
