In this lecture, Dr. Peter Edwell (Macquarie University) discusses the 'military hoards' of Dura Europos. Of the 22 identified hoards of coins from Dura Europos published in the final report on the coins discovered at the city a number were identified in association with the Roman military presence at the city. Considerable interpretation of the significance of these hoards was undertaken soon after their discovery in the 1930s, and since then the most detailed analyses of the military hoards has been associated with dating the final fall of the city to the Sasanian Persians. This paper provided an updated analysis of the composition of the so-called military hoards from Dura and challenges some of the assumptions made at the time of their discovery. Two of the hoards, which were found with burials, received special attention in this paper and provided a rare snapshot of coins carried by individuals for daily use at the time of their burial. This presentation is a recording of NUMISMA's November meeting, held on November 28 2023. NUMISMA is the seminar series of the Australian Centre for Ancient Numismatic Studies. Researchers, students, curators and collectors interested in the study of ancient coins are welcome and encouraged to join our monthly seminars.
