NYU Florence Democracy and Journalism Beyond simply covering a story and reporting facts, journalism has long been committed to shining light on social injustice. Recent movements like Black Lives Matter, #MeToo, and the Women’s March have brought new forms of activism into the newsroom, many finding expression through digital media, provoking renewed debate around the question: Where does journalism end and activism begin? Alexandra Borchardt will discuss the increasing interplay between journalism and activism today and the role of journalists in fostering social change in contemporary society. Alexandra Borchardt Director of Leadership Programmes at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford Alexandra Borchardt is Director of Leadership Programmes at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford. There she develops and leads the “Oxford Perspectives” seminar series targeting senior journalists and media managers. Prior to this she was managing editor of Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ), one of Germany’s leading quality dailies. She teaches “Leadership and Strategy in the 21st Century” at TU Munich, gives lectures and keynotes on digitalisation and the media and regularly publishes commentaries, for example with Project Syndicate. She is the author of Mensch 4.0 – Frei bleiben in einer digitalen Welt (Freedom in a Digital World, 2018). She serves as Vice-Chair on the Council of Europe Committee of Experts on Quality Journalism in the Digital Age. Gianluca Sgueo NYU Florence Lecturer ‘Media, Activism & Democracy’ and Professor of ‘Global Advocacy’ at Vrije University in Bruxelles. Department Director at the Institute of Competitiveness "Gianluca Sgueo is Lecturer in “Media, Activism and Democracy” at the New York University-Florence and Professor in "Global Advocacy" at the Vrije Universiteit Brussels. Post-doc scholar in Globalization and Democracy (Centre for Social Studies – University of Coimbra, Portugal), PhD in Administrative Law (University of Salento, Italy), Gianluca Sgueo graduated in Law (University of Rome, La Sapienza, 2004) and in Political Sciences cum laude (University of Viterbo, 2006). After graduating, he specialized in public, administrative and European law. He obtained a MA in Administrative & Public Law (Scuola Superiore della Pubblica Amministrazione e degli Enti Locali, Rome, 2005) and MA in European Law (European Public Law Academy, Athens, 2009). In 2008 he was appointed visiting research fellow at the Law School of the New York University. In 2009 (January-September) he was nominated enseignant-chercheur at Sciences Po, Paris. In 2014 (September-November) he joined the Amsterdam Centre of International Law at the University of Amsterdam as visiting scholar. He holds the position of Department Director at I-Com (Institute for competitiveness – a think tank devoted to economic and social analysis), Faculty Member in the Master Program on “Public Affairs and Communication” (Sole24Ore) and Scientific Director of the Master Degree in “Economics and Management of the Nonprofit Sector” (Sole24Ore).
