After an introduction by the bonang, the melody passes through a fast transition section and then slows down to the second tempo. The largest saron-type instruments, sarons demung, play an interlocking elaboration that alternates neighboring tones around the balungan. The sarons barung, pitched an octave higher than the demung, use a different elaborating technique, inserting pitch 1 or pitch 5 between the balungan tones.
