As a big fan of pottery especially earthenware, we often visit Mashiko (益子町) in different seasons. It is a little town with a mere 20,000 people but very famous in Japan for its beautiful potteries and master craftsmen’s skills. Mashiko ware is distinguished by its rustic appearance. Fitting the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi (侘び寂び) simplicity, its popularity began in the 19th century because it was attractive yet practical. The pottery was mostly used as kitchenware at the time. Besides its pottery culture, Mashiko is also home to some beautiful classical architecture such as ancient temples. We were fortunate to capture the moments of autumn leaves in the local temple without crowds and noises. Many Tokyo region people also come here over the weekends to find the unique antiques for their collections and hobbies. For us, we love window shopping these absolute gorgeous potteries in the slow motions. There is one shop we are always fond of. It is opened by an elderly gentleman with his gorgeous cat. You would have to shout loud if you want to find someone working inside as the elderly gentleman is not around, it takes a few moments for him to come down from upstairs with his cat in no hurry, which we find rather interesting. Last time, my hubby treated me a unique mug for my fresh coffee every morning first thing. There are also many quirky and cute local shops you can buy lovely presents for your loved ones. Last time I also bought some dry flowers from a cute self-serve shop (you just leave cash in a box) to decorate my home office. There are many local cafes and restaurants you can take a rest and enjoy the delicious local cuisine. We do have our favourite one, which is opened by an elderly cute lady. The homemade food and coffee here are unbeatable and we love the atmosphere greatly, so we keep coming back :-) After lunch, we often go for a walk in Mashiko’s forest before heading home. Thanks for watching to the end. Please do not miss Mashiko if you are a huge fan of potteries and antiques. #pottery #益子町 #Mashiko #wabi_sabi #詫びさび #益子焼
