Editor's opinion: In the D/P anime, Bertha was played by an unconfirmed actor, who fans have suspected to be Mary O’Brady. I must say, while the other Sinnoh Elite Four English voices didn’t impress me much, Bertha’s was a pleasant surprise. Her actor pulls off the old sounding voice well, it helps perhaps that I don’t fully know who the actor was, but it sounded convincing. She has a Glenn Close vibe to her voice, which is really cool and fitting for Bertha. And the actor also portrays this Bertha’s witty and serious but also kind and wise personality well. I don’t have any major criticisms for her performance. In Masters, Bertha was voiced by Dorah Fine. Playing a more game accurate version of the character, I thought she did a Fine (*ahem) job as Bertha, also sounding kind, wise and fun-loving. I’ve mentioned before in these VCs however that some actors don’t pull off an elderly sounding voice that well, and sadly I think Dorah Fine falls into this boat. While it doesn’t ruin her performance as the character for me, it’s still distracting, in some lines I’m reminded it’s a young actor playing an older character. Overall however, Dorah Fine still does a satisfactory job as Bertha. In terms of the definitive voice, it comes down to preference for anime or game Bertha. Personally, while Bertha in the games was fine if not forgettable for me, her anime counterpart offered a more fun, more stately and more memorable take on the character. For that reason, I’m giving it to the anime actor as the definitive voice for Bertha.
