Today we’re in a lovely village that’s inland from the Thanet coast…but in times gone by this was a village that used to be on the banks of a huge channel known as the Wantsum Channel, and it is that body of water which now no longer exists, which gives the village half of its name, indirectly. The other half is attributed to the huge 13th century church with its monolithic tower. When the Wantsum Channel was around it was navigable, and ships used to sail along its length. Thanet was an island back then. It was separated from the mainland by both the Wantsum and the River Stour, but you were able to walk between the island and the mainland by wading across the ford which existed. These days the Wantsum has silted up, and all that remains is a small river which is nowhere near the size of the body of water that ran through these parts. Based around so much water, areas surrounding the parish are quite marshy, and the vast quantity of land to the North which falls within the boundaries is low lying. The village itself is notable for the church, it is without a doubt the standout feature, and spoiler alert here – I do manage to get inside this one! There’s far more to this village than that though. Here you’ll find a small row of shops which includes a post office, a handy parish map, a small antiques shop and a few campsites which holidaymakers use as a base for the coastal towns a few miles away. Thanet Earth as well, split between this and Monkton, is covered in this video. It is a huge site, home to one of the UK’s leading suppliers of cucumbers, peppers and tomatoes, and the fruit and vegetables which are made here are transported and sold all over the UK in supermarkets I’m sure you’ll all be familiar with. It’s just another part to what is one of those village you just wish that you could spend more time in. All in all this is a great village on the edge of a former island, that is named for St Nicholas’ church in a place where you could cross a river channel by wading over it.
