The Columbian gene gives us a gentle introduction to simple applied chicken genetics. We learn about the inheritance of a simple dominant gene, but also get a better understanding of how genetic ratios work, and expected outcomes from breeding experiments. We can also use genetic ratios the other way around to the way they are usually shown, to make inferences about parent birds from their chicks. If, on crossing two Columbian birds some of the chicks are wildtype, without Columbian patterning, then we know both parents are heterozygous for Columbian. If, however, we only get Columbian patterned chicks then we can assume that either at least one parent is homozygous, or, we have too small a sample size to be certain either way. In this case we would either need further information about the parents, or we’d need to make further crosses, to decide on the parental genotypes.
