Have you ever wondered how chickens can be so variable? Well that’s down to an amazing and beautiful process called meiosis, which is the genetically important part of making eggs and sperms. How much potential variation can meiosis cause do you think? A thousand genotypes, a million, a billion maybe? No, not close - keep going! There are over 549 billion possible combinations of paternal and maternal chromosomes that can be created by meiosis, and then there’s a special process called crossing over that creates yet more, variation, and that’s before you even think about allele diversity! If we could have a dollar for every possible combination we’d be much, much richer than Elon Musk was this year. Better not mention that to the chickens, or they might start getting ideas! So join me today for a quick look at the essentials of meiosis. Learn how this wondrous amount of diversity happens. Understanding meiosis just a bit helps us to understand inheritance a lot more.
