Sewer Backup - Repair and Installation of Outdoor Cleanout. Best Plumbing 206-633-1700. Dave Jenkins is onsite to show us what happens when they have a sewer backup. This is a three-day project that shows us the process to fix the pipe and how to install a cleanout which will speed up repair in the event of a future backup. Video transcript: Interviewer: What happened? Dave Jenkins: They had a sewer back up in the basement actually so we attempted to cable it. Couldn't get through so we camera located and provided the customer with a bid to do a spot repair here. We picked up the permit yesterday and then called in our locates and actually began excavation this morning. As you can see, we're getting to dig right now and here shortly, we'll be down to pipe and be able to put in our shoring and make our repair. Safety is a big issue. First we have to dig our hole out and then we have to install safety shoring and get a ladder down there to have a safe working trench we have to do that. That's next as soon as we get down to where we're going. These are the walls for the side of the trench and those are the jacks that hold it open. We called an 811 dig alert before excavation. This just allows us to know where the utilities are at so we don't hit any gas or water or power in the ground. Seattle City Light just showed up to show us where the utilities are marked up. So on every job site, you want to call in your locates before you excavate. So 811 dig alert calls everyone out to make sure you have a safe job site without any hangups. Now lean over as far as you can to take a whiff. Interviewer: Oh my God. Team: It's flowing now. So whatever it was, you see that big old root there? That must have been what it was, what was plugging it up. Dave Jenkins: It's jammed up quite a bit. Team: Well, it's flowing now. Dave Jenkins: Downstream! Oh yeah I see it's actually taking up the water. Team: So we are going to let it do it's thing for a few minutes probably get some of this stuff out of here. Did you see that big root I pulled out? That's what was plugging it up. It looks like the line is going pretty straight. It's going just like this. Dave Jenkins: So there's a plug in the line and we never know if we hit the pipe, if it's plugged four feet also in front of it. So this was actually good because when you hit the pipe it actually pulled the blockage and what you see is the building's back pressure draining into our trench and downstream the line open. So the flow right now is going through. He actually pulled the blockage out all in one sweep. Yea, this is good news for everyone involved. Because all that water that's flowing, the back pressure, that would be backing up in the trench and we could have potential issues farther down. So we will recamera the area to verify that it's gone and make sure there's no problems farther down. Interviewer: Do you do the camera now or later? Dave Jenkins: What we'll do is excavate a little bit more. We're going to let all the water pressure come out, excavate a little bit more, put our shoring in there and make our repair. Probably jet some of the line out and I'll do the recamara here in a couple hours. Interviewer: What happened yesterday after I left? Did you let the pipe just drain a little bit? Team: We let it drain and then we dug it down and we were able to open it up and we were able...pretty much the bottom part we were able to do. We are just bringing the cleaouts up now. So we got them in service yesterday before we left. We're almost there. As soon as he tightens that up, we put this pieace of pipe here and the rock work, we're good. Interviewer: What is he doing? Is he replacing the pipe? Team: Yeah, he's installing a cleanout. A four foot pipe of PVC. Interviewer: Where is the cleanout going to be? Is it going to be up front? Team: Right here. That's the top of one and this one will be pretty close and then we put a nice little yard box on at the end so it just looks like a sprinkler box. So you don't see this sticking out. That's like one of the last things we do. We will bring back some bark, make it all look pretty.
