EAST LINDSEY PARISH #7: WRAGBY Welcome to a brand new area of East Lindsey – we’ve moved away from Grimsby now and this is Wragby, right on the border between East Lindsey and West Lindsey. Its one of the most populous places in the district and sits on the A158, the main road between Lincoln and Skegness. Now, there is some debate over whether or not Wragby is village or a town. Officially, it’s a village, because its governed by Wragby Parish Council, which does not have town status. However, that can be argued against because there’s a Town Hall – not a village hall. Adding to the confusion, in the 1600s, Wragby was classed as a market town and a staging centre, thanks to a royal charter. Over time Wragby has evolved from being a stopping point en route to the coast into a burgeoning settlement in its own right. It has a plethora of amenities including three pubs, a chippy, a café and a supermarket. The population has expanded too though the building of three new housing estates, mainly to the West of the central Market Place. Industry wise, this is a place that was – and still is in its outer reaches – all about the corn trade. On Bardney Road there’s a windmill which once ground it, and its former station was once used to transport it. Culturally, the Brady touring company of actors once performed here the and late 1970s band The Sinking Ships also originated from Wragby.
