A playthrough of the sub-boss Shion in the PS2 port of SNK’s The King of Fighters XI. As if Ash Crimson wasn’t enough, the androgyny of the Ash Saga continues with the sub-boss of the game, Shion. Shion was, actually, originally meant to be the daughter of Ron, one of Zero’s lackeys in the NESTS saga. This would have been a good idea, but as this is from a Japanese developer we are now lead to the suspension of disbelief that this character is male. Despite being petite, extremely feminine and even having a female voice. Needless to say, Shion is one of the least intimidating bosses in existence, which is fine as his actual moveset is fucking brilliant. While Magaki was a boring, simplistic mess of a character, Shion on the other hand is actually extremely interesting. You see, he has a combination of two different movesets at once. Some of these moves cross over between the two sets, but many are unique to individual sets. Shion has one moveset when he’s wielding his spear, which he uses by default, and another when he is barehanded. When he’s knocked down he loses his spear, but can regain it by inputting a command. He can also input a command to take away the spear, if the player so chooses. When wielding his spear, Shion mostly relies on long-ranged spin and slash attacks. He’s also able to chain a couple of his spear specials into one another, as well as super cancel into his spear super move. When bare-handed, he relies on martial-arts strikes and quite combos, including a special move very reminiscent of the Kyokugen-ryu zanrestsuken. Trying to land these combos can be pain however, given how extremely dash happy the AI is in this game. Some moves cross over between movesets however, as I said. One of these is Shion’s very cheap (and admittedly rather broken) invisible projectile, which can be spammed to your delight, and makes for extremely easy victories. It’s reminiscent of Takuma Sakazaki’s invisible fireball from some of the KOF titles, but this one not only comes out faster but can be linked into combos really easily too. Oh, and it can also be used in the air, because why not. He also has this whip-esque thing he pulls out during HK normal, and can do a variety of combos with, it’s pretty interesting. His LDM is pretty awful however; he flies up into the strike and three boulders drop from the sky in three different directions; it’s rather baffling and not dramatically useful. He can also lay on the floor for some reason, which is a funny little move, but not useful from what I could tell. Altogether, this makes Shion a pretty damn formidable boss on the whole, and he makes for a good if sometimes cheap sub-boss. Unlike Magaki, he’s a fun character to play as, as well, as feels like an addition to the roster rather than a cheap mess thought up of in five minutes. I still think his extremely feminine design is pretty silly, but it is what it is. Shion is damn strong with a cheap projectile, some nice long-ranged attacks and a unique dual-moveset, which leads to him being one of the most unique characters of the entire series, and certainly one of its most interesting and fun bosses. Next up, I move onto the mid-bosses, and look at a boss I once covered hundreds of videos ago, from one of SNK’s most obscure titles.
